Almost two years after its original release back in February 2022, FromSoftware’s popular action RPG Elden Ring is back in the news today for its DLC called the Shadow of the Erdtree. This new Elden Ring DLC drops on June 21, 2024, but you can get a glimpse of what’s to come later this year in a 3-minute trailer that Bandai Namco release via its YouTube channel.
The Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC trailer is everything the fans hoped it would be, and it shows a lot exciting gameplay along with some new ways to get butchered. FromSoftware’s mainman Hidetaka Miyazaki has called it the “biggest expansion” his company has ever worked on. It doesn’t seem to have any new inputs from George R. R. Martin, though.
That’s right, the new Elden Ring DLC is said to be based on the same part of that original mythology that George penned for them. It’s not necessarily a bummer, but it would have been nice to see some new involvement from the Game of Thrones author.
As for George Martin’s involvement, essentially it is the same as it was with the base game. The DLC Shadow of the Erdtree is based on one part of that original mythos that he penned for us. It’s not a brand new mythos that he’s written specifically for Shadow of the Erdtree, he has not created something new which informed the design of the DLC. It’s simply another part of the original story that we thought fit to tell as a new expansion.

Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has everything that couldn’t fit in the main game
As for the DLC itself, Miyazaki noted that it’s been passively in the works since the end of Elden Ring’s development. It only went into active development when the updates and patches for the base game began to settle down. He further added that it’s their “largest expansion to date in terms of overall volume,” which is quite exciting.
It’s said to take place in a new brand new area of a new map, which includes field areas, dungeons, and more. FromSoftware boss also added that there will be 10 new boss fights, and plenty of new weapons, equipment and skill to unlock. Lastly, it is worth that you may encounter Malenia’s brother Miquella. At least that’s what it looks like from the trailer. I guess we’ll find out more on June 21st when the DLC hits the shelves for $40, so stay tuned.
