Apex Legends seasons 21 update goes live in a few days, but Respawn has already revealed some key details to stir some excitement. The new season — Upheaval — brings a slew of changes and a couple of additions to the game. There are some huge map, gameplay, and weapon changes to look forward. Respawn is also bringing the Solos mode back, albeit for a limited time as a takeover event.
The most exciting addition to the game, in my opinion, is the new legend named Alter. That’s right, we’re getting a new legend this time around, which automatically makes this season a bit more exciting than the previous one. Alter is the 26th legend to be added to the game’s existing roster, and she brings an interesting set of abilities to the Apex games. Let’s dive in!
Who is Alter in Apex Legends season 21?
Everything we know about the mysterious new legend
Not much is known about Alter just yet because, well, she seems to be very secretive about her past. The only thing we know for now is that Alter’s real name is YingLing Lui, and that she has travelled through multiple dimensions using her Void tech. Alter also appears to be drawn to destruction, and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of that in the Apex games with her in the mix.
Alter also seems to have a fixation on Horizon, which is interesting. We don’t know how —or if at all — they’re connected, but she definitely has her eyes set on the ‘space mommy.’ I’m sure we’ll learn more about Alter in due time, but let’s shift our focus to her abilities and see how she’ll impact the games.
Apex Legends Alter abilities
Alter’s passive, tactical, and ultimate abilities
- Class: Skirmisher
- Passive: Gift from the Rift
- Alter can use her passive ability to not only see deathboxes through walls, but also loot an item from them. You can use this passive ability to your advantage in a lot of different ways, but I’d say it’s perfect for quickly grabbing some meds or shields when you’re, say, trying to escape from a squad or outrun the ring. You can’t pick up shield cores using her passive ability, though, so keep that in mind.
- Tactical: Void Passage
- Alter can create portals through surfaces, opening a path for you and your squadmates. You can use these portals to your advantage in various ways, but it’s worth keeping in mind that you will be vulnerable for a brief period after exiting them. Also, you can simply enter these Void portals like you’d get inside Wraith’s portals. You have to interact with it manually to use them, and that adds a bit more complexity.
- Alter can shoot the Void roughly upto 45 meters away from her, and it’ll let you traverse through surfaces that are up to 20 meters thick. That greatly limits the surfaces she and her squadmates can traverse through, so keep that in mind. Oh, and did I tell you that even your foes can take these Void portals behind you?
- Ultimate: Void Nexus
- With her ultimate ability, Alter can place a device anywhere on the map, which she and her squadmates can travel back to at any point. This ability is useful to get out of tricky situations pretty quickly, as long as the device hasn’t been destroyed. One thing to keep in mind is that Alter and her squadmates can only use the Void Nexus device once.
- Your enemies can also see and use your Void Nexus device, so that also opens you up to a world of trouble. The fact that they can see it on the ground means they can even choose to camp and wait for your return.
Can ‘Alter’ alter the course of the Apex games?
Alter’s ability kit seems pretty strong, at least on paper, but only time will tell how this new legend will fair against the existing legends on the roster. I’m particularly interested in how Alter’s kit will compare to that of Wraith, as they both seem to share a lot of similarities.
