Helldivers 2 is one of the most popular game out there right now, and there’s no two ways about it. If this is the first article you are about Helldivers 2, then allow me tell you that it currently has 436,854 concurrent players right now, with 458,709 players in the last 14 hours.
Helldivers 2 been adding players every day and is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the game’s lead developer and CEO of Arrowhead (its studio), Johan Pilestedt, just confirmed that they are updating the max concurrent user capacity to 700,000 to accommodate more active players and reduce queue times.
Ubisoft’s AAA title is struggling to gain traction even with a free trial
While Helldivers 2 is steadily racking players, Ubisoft’s Skull & Bones — which also debuted around the same time — is struggling to bring in players. Both of these games released just a week apart, so they were competing directly with each other for playtime. Skull & Bones, however, has only managed to hit the 850,000 player milestone since its launch, at least according to a report from Insider Gaming.
It may not seem like a particularly bad figure at first, but it starts to look less impressive when you realize that it’s not a tally of concurrent players, but a total of how many have installed and played the game so far. It’ll look far less impressive when you consider that this is despite the 8-hour free trial Ubisoft is giving for the game.
Skull & Bones’ lack of content and a particularly high price tag, makes it a disappointing package overall. This is the same game, which Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot defended recently by saying it’s “quadruple-A” game.
It’ll be interesting to see what Ubisoft adds to Skull and Bones to make it more interesting and appeal to more players. It appears to be very limited at the moment, but you can still take advantage of the free trial and give it a shot. If not, you can always hop into Helldivers 2 and see if it’s really worth all the hype.
