Minecraft’s 15th anniversary celebrations brought new Twitch and TikTok capes and free maps for the players recently. Now, the celebrations are coming to a close with a surprise announcement that no one would’ve seen coming from a mile away. Netflix and Mojang today announced they are working on a Minecraft animated series.
Minecraft animated series confirmed by Netflix
Everyone’s favorite blocky survival sandbox game, Minecraft, is getting an animated show exclusively on Netflix. This show will “tell an original story with new characters and reflect the world of Minecraft in a new light.”
The description of the announcement video on YouTube reads, “The best-selling game of all time & the biggest streamer in the world are teaming up to bring you a brand NEW Minecraft Netflix animated series!”
The teaser video shows a creeper mob appearing on screen before blowing up as it does after chasing me across the Minecraft world. The video then pans through a lava waterfall in the Nether to reveal the Netflix insignia with bat clicks in the background. You will then see the “Netflix x Minecraft” and “Coming Soon” text on the screen.
We don’t have a release date for the Minecraft animated series just yet. So, stay tuned for more information.
The Minecraft animated series is being developed by WildBrain, the studio behind other popular Netflix shows like Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego. If you’re curious about the voice actor cast or episode count, sadly, it’s all under wraps for now.
Fans already knew that a Minecraft movie with Jason Momoa and Jack Black was in the works. Its director even commented on his goal to avoid an ugly Sonic situation to keep fans happy. Both the movie and animated series are going to tell an original story, so I’m intrigued to see what direction each medium takes to keep fans glued to their screens.
