Next in line for live-action adaptations of a video game is Minecraft, the popular sandbox game that we all enjoy. The Minecraft movie is coming, and coming in hot next year. Part of the cast has already been revealed, and the project is well underway. However, if you want some more juicy details, Minecraft movie director Jared Hess (known for Napolean Dynamite) shared new details in a recent interview.
In an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Hess said that “they just want to avoid an ugly Sonic situation” with the Minecraft movie. He essentially means that the production team wants to stay faithful to the source in terms of theme and design elements. Hess also said that he doesn’t want to disappoint the fans, and added:
I just can’t disappoint the 10-year-olds, or they’re going to murder us.

What Does Hess Mean by the Ugly Sonic Situation?
Those unaware of the Sonic situation, I would like to remind you that the first trailer of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie (2020) received immense backlash from fans for the hyper-realistic design of our beloved hedgehog. Sonic’s design in the movie was vastly different from the video game. He was furry and looked odd.
The criticism didn’t go unnoticed as the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was delayed, and the team went back to the drawing board. Three months later, the movie released, and Sonic’s design was much closer to the games. This change was welcomed by the fans with open arms, and the film went to be a worldwide hit. You can check out the difference between the old and new design in the YouTube video below:
Moreover, while we would have loved to hear about the plot, nothing was revealed on that front. Hess did mention that adapting an open sandbox game like Minecraft is a challenge, and one that he’s excited about. “Trying to adapt something that doesn’t have a story — it’s an open sandbox game. … I like the challenge. There’s got to be a fun, ridiculous movie here. And there is,” he said in the interview.
Also, Hess revealed that the production designer for the Minecraft movie is Grant Major, who is well-known for his work on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The Minecraft movie is set to release on to be released on April 4, 2025. We already know that Jason Momoa and Jack Black (possibly playing Steve) are part of the Minecraft movie cast.
