It was a bright and sunny day out here as I sat with my phone to solve today’s NYT Strands puzzle. But little did I know that it was about to come pouring down, forcing me to head inside. Funny how the weather can change in a jiffy sometimes, and nothing can prepare you for the worst. Okay, that’s enough commentary on the weather, so let’s take a look at the hints and answers for NYT Strands on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
NYT Strand’s official theme hint for March 17
Today’s theme for the NYT Strands puzzle is “Outside interests.” I wonder where the NYT editors are going with this? Are they asking us to go outside? Meet friends and have fun? It sounds like they want us to go touch some grass today.
Outside interests could mean a lot of things, so today’s theme is not as straightforward, I must say. But it’s nothing a few hints can’t help you with, so don’t be ashamed to guess as many words as you can and get to those hints. You can read our NYT Strands giude to learn more about unveiling hints.
NYT Strands hints for Spangram and theme words
You may have some trouble guessing the right theme words today considering how ‘Today’s Theme’ doesn’t convey much. Don’t be afraid to look for non-theme words and rack up those hints, though, as even a single hint will set you up for success.

I had a bit of trouble guessing the first couple of theme words, but I mowed through the rest in just a few minutes after that. Guessing the spangram was also fairly simple after I used the hints to reveal the first two words. I guess you can blame it on my “Skill Issue” because our Entertainment Editor Zack was able to solve everything without any hints.
Today’s theme words didn’t really do much to help me find the words, so I immediately turned my attention towards finding a few non-theme words to get hints. After guessing words like SWAM, NORM, FOES, and SWARM, I unlocked my first hint which led me to finding HAIL.
I had another hint waiting for me, so I decided to use it and found RAIN. This was the moment I realized what the NYT Editors meant by “Outside interests.” It was all about the weather, and that’s when I stumbled upon today’s spangram. Honestly, the “cast” word parallel to “rain” gave it away, and it was a smooth sail from this point onwards.
The rest of the theme words BLIZZARD, TORNADO, and SUNSHINE quickly fell into place, and it was only a matter of time before I completely solved the puzzle.
See you all tomorrow for another puzzle for which I hope to get a better hint from NYT Editors.
