Prepare your light cycles and get ready for another lap around the Grid. Yeah, you heard it right. The filming for the next Tron movie, Tron: Ares, is now underway after being plagued by a series of delays last year. This is the third installment in the Disney’s sci-fi series and follows 2010’s Tron Legacy.
Though the movie was supposed to start filming sometime in August 2023, the schedule was derailed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. But once the strike came to an end last year, some of the most popular project restarted, and here we are! Director Joachim Rønning has taken to Instagram today to confirm that filming for Tron 3 has commenced.
As you can see in the Instagram post below, Rønning shared a set photo with the director chair carrying the Tron logo, stylized as “TR3N,” with “3” in the place of “O”. Furthermore, the post includes the caption, “WEEK 1 ON THE GRID,” which is enough to send Tron fans like me back to 2010.
Not much else can be guessed based on Rønning’s Instagram post, except for the official reveal of Jared Leto’s casting. The actor-cum-musician has been tagged in the post.
What Should You Expect from Tron 3?
The Tron movie series kicked off in 1982 under director Steven Lisberger, who brought to life Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) and his story of being able to enter the video game called “Tron” in digital form. This gave birth to a visual fiesta that’s revered by fans to this day.
This was followed up by Tron: Legacy in 2010, where Flynn’s son Sam (Garrett Hedlund), accidentally entered the game in search of his dad. Though he did get to meet his dad in the game, Sam was unable to bring him back to real life. However, that was not the case with Quora (Olivia Wilde), the ISO-character created by the game, who made it out with Sam.
And this is the cliffhanger we’ve been left with for 10+ years. Does Clu find a way to reach the real world? Do we get a digital war brought to real life? Guess we might find out in the third Tron movie, but it’s plot is currently unknown. There is no word on whether Tron 3 is going to pick up the story where Legacy ended or tell a new one.
For now, all we know is that Jared Leto (known for Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club) is in the lead role. Other Tron 3 cast members are Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee, but their roles are yet to be confirmed.
Tron 3, possibly called Tron: Ares, does not have a release date yet. You will hear more on this once Disney makes an official announcement, so stay tuned.
